​An introduction to The Twenty-One Taras Tangka

The Twenty-One Taras, refers to the twenty-one manifestations of the goddess Tara in Tibetan Buddhism. This concept encompasses both a revered pantheon of female deities and the liturgical text that praises them, which stands as one of the most widely recited prayers in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.


1. Green Tara, the Main Figure of the Twenty-One Taras

Green Tara is the foremost of the twenty-one Taras. Because her entire body is emerald green in color, she is called "Green Tara." Her form is as follows: she wears a five-Buddha jeweled crown, is clad in celestial garments, and is adorned all over with necklaces and jewels. She sits upon a lotus and moon disc: her right leg is extended downward, with her foot resting on a lotus, while her left leg is drawn in. Her right hand rests on her right knee, palm outward, forming the wish-granting mudra, and holds an utpala flower; her left hand is placed at her chest, holding an utpala flower with the Three Jewels mudra. Her face is kind and beautiful.

Her body is white. Her left hand holds a lotus, upon which is a long-life treasure vase filled with amrita.

Her body is red. Her right hand forms the gesture of fearlessness, and her left hand holds a lotus, upon which is a fire mirror.

Her body is red. Her right hand holds a lotus, upon which is a vajra hook, and her left hand holds a lotus, upon which is a lasso.

Her body is yellow. Her right hand holds a wish-fulfilling jewel at her chest, and the top of her left hand holds a staff with a vajra hook.

Her body is red. Her left hand holds a lotus, upon which is a vajra hook.


16、Tara-Who Averts Destruction Caused by Wind

Her body is white. Her right hand forms the gesture of fearlessness, and her left hand holds a lotus, upon which is a great Mount Sumeru, and upon the mountain is a dharma wheel.

Her body is black. Her left hand holds a lotus, upon which stands a curved knife.


18、Tara-Who Averts Destruction Caused by Armies

Her body is blue. Her right hand forms the gesture of fearlessness, and her left hand holds a flower, upon which stands a precious sword. Reciting her mantra can protect one from all harm caused by weapons and bombs.


19、Tara-Who Averts Heaven-born Calamities & Enhances Indestructibility

Her body is green. Her right hand forms the gesture of fearlessness, and her left hand holds a flower, upon which is a crossed vajra. Lightning, hail, drought, torrential rain, floods, and so on cannot harm the practitioner.

Her body is black. Both hands hold at her chest a three-faced phurba vajra, and her three eyes are wide open in wrath. When she twists and turns this phurba, it can shatter the minds of demons.


21、Tara-Who Heals Sickness

Her body is green. Her left hand holds a lotus, upon which is a radiant coconut, shining like the sun.
