Jiaya Tibetan Carpets:Weave a better life in the warp and weft
Jiaya Village is located in Huangzhong County, Qinghai Province. In the 1970s and 1980s, more than 90% of peasant households in Jiaya Village could weave Tibetan carpets.
Most products were sold to different places in Xizang, Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu, and Inner Mongolia. “Our ancestors all made Jiaya Tibetan carpets. Yang’s Jiaya Tibetan carpet weaving technique has been inherited for more than 200 years,” said Yang Yongliang, inheritor of Jiaya Tibetan carpet weaving technique, a representative project of the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage.
At that time, there was no drawings. They would simply choose among those traditional patterns. With the development of the times, the traditional technique is combined with the workmanship in modern times to meet the market demands. Nowadays, Jiaya Tibetan carpets have not only the traditional patterns but also all kinds of innovative and modern patterns, colors, and specifications.
Many of them can even be specially customized, with their purposes more diversified from daily use to decoration and collection. “ We hope that young people can pass on our techniques through training. This is my biggest wish!” Yang Yongliang expects that Jiaya Tibetan carpets could have infinite possibilities in the new era.
