Tibet’s annual express delivery volume to exceed 10 million packages

Just a few days after “Double 11” shopping bonanza, Phuntsok, a resident of Tashizong Township in Tingri County, Shigatse City, Tibet, received his express delivery. “Order in the early morning of November 11, and it arrives the morning of the 19.” 50-year-old Phuntsok, who lives at the foot of Mount Qomolangma, made his first online purchase this year. He was quite satisfied with the speed of delivery.

Thanks to improvements in transportation and logistics infrastructure, the express delivery to the Roof of the World is getting faster. Following last year’s total business volume of 8.74 packages, in the first three quarters of this year, Tibet’s express delivery business increased by nearly 30 percent, and the volume for the entire year will surely exceed 10 million packages.

According to statistics from the Tibet Autonomous Region Postal Administration, for current express packages from inland provinces to counties in Tibet, air delivery packages take on average three to five days to arrive, and ground delivery packages take on average five to seven days. Express delivery business volume in the region has grown from 4.06 million packages in 2015 to nearly more than double that in 2019.

The thriving express delivery industry has helped more “good things from Tibet” enter the large inland market, helping locals increase their incomes and alleviate poverty. According to statistics from the Tibet Autonomous Region Department of Commerce, during “Double 11” this year, online sales of Tibetan specialty agricultural products reached 75 million yuan, an increase of 21.7 percent over last year. From November 12 to 15 alone, Lhasa Gonggar International Airport shipped 155 tons of postage, an increase of 16 percent over the same period last year.
