Tibet: Broadband to cover all villages in "13th Five-Year Plan" period

Tibet will construct high speed agile communications and information facilities infrastructure in "13th Five-Year Plan" period(2016-2020), according to a newly released plan in terms of information communication development of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

The plan says that by the end of the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, under the provisions of the current policy conditions, Tibet will strive for implementing 100 percent broadband coverage in all of its administrative villages.

According to the plan, small villages with 15 or more households, relocated and borderland villages with 10 or more households will have mobile communication signal coverage. Meanwhile, townships and larger places of residence, 3A and above scenic spots, national highways, provincial highways, key routes as well as agricultural and pastoral areas will achieve at least 75 percent broadband coverage rate by the end of 2020.

At present, there are about 1.87 million internet users in Tibet (59 percent of the penetration rate) and there are 255,000 households with fixed broadband internet. By the end of 2020, Tibet's internet penetration rate will reach 85 percent; households with broadband internet will reach 340,000; households with 20M fixed broadband internet will account for 70 percent. 

The plan clarifies that during the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, Tibet will construct information and communication infrastructure, enhance further the informationization of the economy and society, so as to serve social development and promote long-term peace and stability.
