BestknownfortheirgiantsizeandloyaltytotheirownersTibetanMastiffshavebeenraisedinalmosteveryshepherdhouseholdinSanjiangyuantoprotectsheepfromwolves.

About10 yearsagoafeverforowningaTibetanMastiffstartedtospreadacrossChina,especiallyamongwealthyfamiliesincitiesAtthepeakofthetrendlotsofbuyersfromeastChinacametoSanjiangyuantofindapetandagoodMastiffcouldbesoldforashighasmillionsofyuanManypeopleinSanjiangyuanstartedtobreedthedog.

HoweverthepriceforTibetanMastiffsstartedtoplummetafter2010 andlotsofdogswereabandonedasthecostoffeedingthegiantdogisveryhigh.

TheabandonedTibetanMastiffsnotonlygrabfoodfromotherwildanimalstheyalsoattacklivestockandevenpeopleontheroadEnvironmentalexpertsalsowarnthatthedogcouldalsobringfatalinfectiousdiseasestootheranimals.

Sofarthereportsaysabout5,000 strayTibetanMastiffshavebeencapturedandcaredforinanimalsheltersinYushuanautonomousprefectureinSanjiangyuanHowever,authoritiessaymoremeasuresneedtobetakenastheabandonedTibetanMastiffsarestillgrowinginnumberandtheyarenotbeingtakencareofintherestofSanjiangyuan.
