January 11 was the 21st birthday of third-year Qinghai Nationalities University student Lhatso. Lhatso left her home early at 6 in the morning, preparing to spend a more meaningful birthday unlike any of her previous ones: she chose to spend the day giving warmth to sanitation workers. She asked a friend to drive a car carrying 300 bottles of hand lotion, 300 pairs of gloves, and 300 earmuffs which she bought herself, all along the streets of Xining, meeting sanitation workers and giving each one of them a gift. In a single morning, Lhatso was able to hand out 60 gifts. “My home is in Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province, an area which is teeming with caterpillar fungus, root of silverweed cinquefoil, and other native products of Qinghai. I sell these things after class to make a little money.” Lhatso told the reporter that she intended to give red gloves to the female sanitation workers, but since most of the workers are female, she had given out all of the red gloves in a short amount of time.
