Uncle Zhaxi’s 50 Years of Persistence for Batang Xianzi Dance

Batang County, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, is called the “Hometown of Chinese Xianzi Dance”.

Batang Xianzi Dance is a comprehensive performance art integrating poetry, musical instrument play, song, and dance. It has a history of more than 1,000 years.

Wang Zhaxi, a Xianhu (a kind of Tibetan string instruments) player who is 66 years old, is a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage inheritor of “Batang Xianzi Dance”. He has been learning Batang Xianzi Dance and the production of Xianhu from his ancestors since he was young. He has been engaged in it for more than 50 years.

To protect and inherit the dance and production techniques of the string instruments, Wang Zhaxi established a workshop at home to cultivate more young people, who will be engaged in this traditional handicraft.

In 2006, Batang Xianzi Dance was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list.
