A giant Thangka exhibit to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the passing away of the 10th Panchen Lama was held in Xining on Jan. 28, Qinghai News reported.
The large-scale Thangka scroll “Great Masters of Our Time—the Panchen Lamas” is a reflection of the past first to 10th Panchen Lamas, in particular the great achievements the 10th Panchen Lama Choekyi Gyaltsen had achieved in his lifetime. The painting was created through adopting the combined painting skills of Tibetan traditional Thangka, traditional Chinese painting and Western painting, displaying the history of the Panchen Lamas in honor of their patriotism, love for the people and religion, and outstanding contributions to safeguarding national unification, ethnic unity and their noble moral characters.

The Thangka scroll is divided into three sections: the first section covers the first through the 9th Panchen Lamas (13th – 19th centuries); the second section covers the time span from the birth to the political career of the 10th Panchen Lama (the 1930s – the early 1950s); the third section covers the period from the beginning of reform and opening-up period (1978) to the present day. The content of the Thangka puts special emphasis on the major events and historical moments in the 10th Panchen Lama’s lifetime.
Since 2012, more than 80 artists from Tibet, Qinghai, Gansu and Sichuan were invited to participate in the planning, design and creation of the project.
