This kind of pasture transfer has last for more than one thousand years. Every year, during the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau's coldest months, when the Phuma Yumtso Lake freezes, local herdsmen herd their sheep onto the small island in the center of the lake to keep the flock alive. The remaining pasture on the island is used to survive the lean winter months.
