First annual Mt. Qomolangma walking conference begins
The first annual Mt. Qomolangma Walking Conference commenced at Mt. Qomolangma National Park on July 15th, Over 20 professional athletes from across China and 40 local walking enthusiasts participated in the event.
The conference lasts two days: on the first day, the participants will adjust to the environment and experience local cultural customs. On the second day, they will begin the seven kilometer walk. “The hike from Rongpo Monastery to Mt. Qomolangma’s base camp has an altitude of as much as 5200 meters, thewalking route has the highest altitude in all of China.” Said Wang Xudong, Director of the Publicity Bureau for Dingri County in Tibet Autonomous Region, where the Mt. Qomolangma National Park is located.
Sonam, Deputy Director of the Mountain Hiking Management Center of Tibet Autonomous Region, explained that Dingri County, located mid-way through the Mt. Qomolangma mountain range, has steep hills and spectacular sights. The area has incredibly rich outdoor and mountain sports resources, as local infrastructure improved in the past few years, more and more hiking enthusiasts have been drawn to the region.
“For this walking conference, the local region provides 24-hour medical services for all participants. As organized walking events like this one build more integrated and standardized service systems, we will be able to offer even more safety guarantee for participants.“ Said Sonam.
Medical professionals have recommended that when walking in high-altitude regions, one should take into consideration one’s particular physical condition and only do what is possible; in addition, one should not be over-stimulated during the walk, and remember to adjust the pace and breathing as needed along the way.
