During the 12th Five Year Plan Period, Qinghai Province invested 186 million yuan into stepping up protection of geological relics, increasing construction of geoparks and boosting the province’s ecological environment, science popularization, local tourism and economic development.

The province has declared start of construction on a number of geoparks. Seven national geoparks have already been completed including Qinghai Golmud Kunlun Mountains, Qinghai Huzhu Beishan, Qinghai Guide, Qinghai Lake, Qinghai Jigzhi Nyanpo Yutse, Qinghai Chentsa Kanbula and Qinghai A-nye Machen. Among them, Qinghai Golmud Kunlun Mountains was named a World level Geopark.

During the 13th Five Year Plan Period, Qinghai must protect 20 national-level geological relics. Of these, six are at Qinghai Golmud Kunlun Mountains National Geopark, two at Qinghai Huzhu Beishan National Geopark, three at Qinghai Guide National Geopark, four at Qinghai Jigzhi Nyanpo Yutse National Geopark, one at Qinghai Chentsa Kanbula National Geopark and four at Qinghai A-nye Machen National Geopark.
