Tibet issues ordinances to protect Yamdrok Yutso Lake

It is reported that an ordinance issued by Shannan City in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region will be implemented on September 1, 2019, with an aim to strengthen the protection of Yamdrok Yutso Lake, one of three major holy lakes in the region.

According to the Ordinances on the Protection of Yamdrok Yutso Lake, the protection scope of the lake is divided into a core protection area and a general protection area according to its function and protection requirements. The core protection area is the area below the historically highest water level in Yamdrok Yutso Lake. The general protection area extends 100 meters horizontally along the surface of the historically highest water level.

The ordinance also encourages people to actively participate in the protection of Yamdrok Yutso Lake. According to the ordinances, a Protecting Mother Lake Action Day will be held every year on May 25 and activities will be carried out on the theme of protecting the mother lake. The ordinance also clearly stipulates the legal responsibilities that must be undertaken for any units or individuals who violate the ordinances.
