Phone charges in Tibet to be reduced from September

Starting from September 1, Tibet Telecom will cancel domestic long-distance and roaming charges for mobile phones. The region's long-distance and roaming charges will be completely canceled by October.

A person in charge says that Tibet will make efforts to promote faster Internet at lower costs in line with the arrangements of the State Council.

From May 1 this year, Tibet Telecom has already reduced the cost of long-distance calls to North America, Europe, Southeast Asia and 73 other countries along the "Belt and Road" as well as to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, with the average decrease of 37% and the biggest drop being 90%.

From June 1, Tibet Telecom will reduce Internet line tariffs; static route access Internet tariffs will be reduced by 15%, lightening the burden of Internet costs for small and medium-sized enterprises.

In Tibet, it's difficult to build mobile communication base stations in remote, high altitude areas. However, with all administrative villages achieving full mobile signal coverage in 2015, more and more Tibetan farmers and herdsmen have started living a mobile life.

In future, Tibet will continue promoting projects bringing information to villages, introduce into mobile and broadband packages that benefit farmers, and use large data platforms to support targeted poverty alleviation and speed up the establishment of an online services platform for farmers.
