Geri Gyaltsten, a Gesar artist who works for recording the King Gesar. There are more than 100 Gesar artists like Geri Gyaltsten whose daily work is collecting the chapters for Gesar to become longer and longer.
According to Chokpa Gatru, director of Qinghai Gesar Research Institute, with the research and collection for Gesar as well as the discovering of Gesar artists, the content for Gesar is keeping on increasing. Currently, there are 500,000 lines in 200 parts for Gesar based upon the common understanding in academe. But in fact, these are collected parts for Gesar and the whole content for Gesar is far more than the collected parts.
Gesar is the name of a Tibetan hero and the epic is for discribing his heroic story which is popular among the areas for Tibetan, Mongolian, Tu ethnic group and Naxi ethnic group. Based upon the myth, legend, story, folk poesy and saying, the Gesar draws a picture of war and complex relationship between different nations and tribes at that time. This epic is over 10 parts longer than Iliad (a famous ancient Greece epic) and Mahabarata (an outstanding Indian epic).
Chinese academia holds that there were only 5 or 6 parts of Gesar, but with the spreading, folk artists fully produced the story and more and more chapters have been produced.
Chokpa Gatru said that Gesar was regarded as the living wealth of human beings. It is popular among people by singing and talking. Though the history of this epic is over 1,000 years, it still remains spreading in Tibetan areas with a living form, so people call it a living epic.
Sonam Norbu is a newly discovered young artist in Zhiduo County of Qinghai province. He says that he can perform 280 parts of Gesar and among which 180 parts have been collected and recorded. Experts hold that Sonam Norbu is the one who masters the most epic parts and singing melodies.
Chokpa Gatru thinks that such kinds of artists are likely to appear at any occasion and if there is any such artist discovered, the content of Gesar will become richer and richer. |
