( August-8 Tuesday )

ChinaTibetannet  Along the route of the very popular new Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the city of Golmud, located in China's Qinghai Province, is now determined to build itself into a mecca on the plateau for world-class tourism.
The city government has earmarked an initial investment of over 6 million yuan for the construction of tourist attractions along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the salt lake tourism region and Kunlun Mountain Scenic Area. Golmud has great potential for tourism. Occupying an area of 124,500 square kilometers, the city is situated in the south-central part of Qaidam Basin on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Mt. Kunlun and Mt. Tangula traverse the entire region with a large number of snow-capped mountains, glaciers, rivers and lakes. Even more, the city is home to not only the headstream of the Yangtse River, but also the largest salt lake in the world, Chaerhan Lake, for which the city was nicknamed "Salt Lake City in China."
Sources from the local tourism bureau say that the number of travelers visiting Golmud in July grew by 20% as compared with the number last year. The increase has been attributed to the opening of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway on July 1st.
