ChinaTibetannet By 1998, the whole Tibet Autonomous Region had had harvest in growing for eleven continuous years. The output of grain and edible oil respectively increased by 65.5% and 338% compared with those in 1978. Stocking raising grows steadily, the output of meat and milk are respectively 1.7 times and 1.03 times higher than those in 1978. The total agricultural production increased in four folds than those in 1978. The conditions for agricultural production have been significantly improved, and the backward situation depending on natural conditions had been changed. Agricultural science and technology have been developed rapidly. The quality of crops, animals and poultry has been improved on a yearly basis. Animal diseases have been well controlled. Peasants' living standard has been raised, with most of the peasants having enough to eat and to wear. Part of the peasants have become rich, and their net income per capita is over eight times more than that in 1978.
The forests cover 717 hectares in Tibet, with 2.084 billion cubic meters of living log, which is number one in China. Over 6,400 kinds of advanced plants have been found there, of which over 40 are nationally protected rare species. 798 kinds of animals have been found, of which 125 kinds are Level I, and II key animals protected by the nation. There are six forestry industries in the region, and over 140 collective enterprises, which form the coordinated logging, transportation, production and service system in the region. The annual output of the log is 220,000 cubic meters, the sawed material 120,000 cubic meter, and the net fixed assets are over 100,000,000 RMB
