China Tibetannet Among the figures available to us now Which have the dresses and ornaments of the ancient Qiang people---ancestors of the Tibetan nationality, there are the figures on the bronze vessels excavated from tombs of the Western Han Dynasty in Shizhaishan of Jinnin area.On these bronze vessels, there are about 300 figures with  different dresses and ornaments, and some of these figures wear their  hair in plaits. The characteristics of these figures are:both male and female figures wear their hair in two plaits;they wear robes or fur-lined cloaks with one or two arms bare and they have ornaments on the head.

The Qiang hairstyle is characterized by its plaits. In the book  The History of  the Three Kingdoms, the following account can be  found in the Chronicles of the Kingdom of Wei nationalities of Wuwan and Xianbi:¨m customs of the Di people…were the same these of the Qiang people  and other northern and western nationalities….They all braided  their hear in plaits.”These figures on the bronze vessels are historical relics that demonstrate the southward migration and wide distribution of the ancient Di and Qiang tribes. The figures with paited—hair provide us with reliable materials for tracing the origins of Tibetan garment. However, the patterns of the dresses and ornaments as they appear on the bronze vessels came into existence not during the warring States period. It can be asserted that the Qiang dresses similar to the present-day  Tibetan clothes had appeared long before that period.

‘  Studies of ancient history and archaeological discoveries shows us that Sichuan,Qinghai,Gansu and Xinjiang are the areas where lived and multiplied the Qiang people which in ancient times constituted a branch of the Tibetan nationality. There were very  frequent migration and cultural exchanges between the ancient    Qiang tribes and—Tibetan aboriginals.
